Brown paper bags

We use way too much of everything and throw away most of it. So I try to find a use for some of that stuff that normally gets tossed aside. One of the things I have been saving is paper bags.

I also save the board from the back of sketchbooks, so I combined that with the paper bags and made some little notebooks with a chain stitch binding.

They are a million miles from archival, I know that; but, they are just notebooks for scribbling grocery lists or other simple things and I don't think they need to outlive me!

Here's a shot of the spines - as requested!

What a wonderful idea. I keep throwing out the paper bags that come from LCBO and they are nice and heavy. I really should find a use for them.

I LOVE working with paper bags! They have such great weight and texture. Archival isn't everything, after all. :)

I think they look beautiful! Great idea.
I once made the same with some calender pages.

Can you post a sideview of the binding? I would love to see the stitching.

This is a great way to recycle! I like paper bags for pages too. I totally agree that not everything needs to be archival.

thanks Dolores, UsefulBooks, Cynnie, Mellie, Deb, Prairie, luthien, and Rob.

Deb, I'll try to get a picture of that for you.

Mellie, I have used some calendar pages in the past as well, another great way to reuse stuff!

Rob, once the paper has been dampened by the glue, the wrinkles can be smoothed with a bone folder when it's applied to the board. Although some of those papers are really thin and it was tricky!

Love the stitching - thanks for the pic. Is that a coptic stitch? I like the threads you are using what are they?

It's a multi-needle chain stitch - which is commonly referred to as coptic, yes. And I used waxed Irish linen bookbinding thread.

I make a very similar sort of book, I use offcuts (post press) from local printers and a much simpler. loose binding.

I think this is a great idea! I have so much paper laying around too, and my notebooks often get really dirty when I'm working in the kitchen writing down notes. Making something thats not archival but uses recyclable resources is a very great way to get around having to buy new cheap notebooks! And this is such an easy stitch to do!! Thanks for the inspiration and idea!

These are astonishing--awesome. I recycled some brown paper gift bags into single signature notebooks after the holidays and really enjoyed the heft and the slight tooth of the paper. Will have to be on the lookout for store/take-out bags like these.

I’ve used my iron to flatten paper bags and tissue paper. You can still see the wrinkles but, the paper is flat and easy to work with. I love the look the wrinkles give it.
