More marbling
When Nick was doing his demonstration the other day, I was also doing some more marbling. Still having some problems finding the right paper. Lots of papers are treated with certain chemicals to make them archival, acid-free, etc. All these things can make bad marbling paper... silly me, I thought that I could put alum on just about any paper and that would make it work. Not quite! Back when marbling was being developed the papers were wonderfully unrefined in comparison, much better for marbling! Anyway. There are still some papers that will work... until they change their recipes... so the paint isn't sliding off every sheet I try. Some of my results from last week...

and yes Jody, that is the idea. Although I now have quite a large pile of marbled papers and I hardly ever allow myself to use them!

what kind of inks or colours do you use? and what do you use for base? Because with oil-marbleing I have never experienced any problem with colour sliding off the paper.... or maybe I was just lucky.
These are gorgeous! I love that second one.
So what papers do work? I'd love to know. Not that I will do any marbling - LOL - but I am paper obsessed!

Oh wow, these are so beautiful. I would love to be able to make some marbled papers.
Question is when you have made such a beautiful paper...can you bring yourself to use it? I have lots of scrapbook paper that I've bought because it was so nice, and I can't bring myself to cut it!

Beautiful papers. I've been reading the responses to your enquiry on the marbling site, all very interesting. Now that I've had to move my enormous collection of marbled and other decorated papers (twice) I've decided that I really must start to use them now. They're wonderful to look at but should be used, so that's my first plan when I finally get my stuff unpacked. And what a nightmare that is turning out to be!

thanks liesan, i am using acrylics on a carrageenan base. i have never used oils. but i think i've finally found some suitable papers!
sara, i do a lot of testing recently, trying as many different papers as i could. and i'm just going through the results and will post here on my blog which papers gave me the best results!
billie, it is a problem, i sometimes don't like to use the papers thinking they are too nice! but when i make my own, i get a lot of partial sheets, the paper is 80% good but i've messed up along one side or smudged it somewhere, and those sheets are easier to use!
