Marbling

This looks fun, eh? Recently I haven't had time to do anything very new or exciting in the world of bookbinding. I had two local craft markets which took up my time for a while; I also have a couple substantial orders to fill; and I just spent a couple days marbling. I had to make 30 marbled sheets that were all the same... or at least very similar, using the same colours and all with the same pattern... To make up for that, I spent the next day using as many colours and patterns as possible. Here are some examples - zooming in on the patterns:

Glad to hear you're keeping so busy, Rhonda! And these papers are mahhh-velous — gorgeous colours and patterns.

these are lovely...i'm working on ways of reproducing marbling using plant dyes but it's proving tricky to stop them blending

marbling with plant dyes! that sounds like a serious project. have you tried a drop of gall in the dyes? or maybe you don't want to use an animal product? but one of the things that gall does for the paints, is prevent them from mixing together.

beautiful papers. I tried marbling once unsuccessfully - didn't have the right products. I do have this on my long long list of things to do.
I havn't had my studio for a week, get it back tommorrow when Parents in law leave. its not the same working on the dining table and having to pack it up every meal time. Have spent the time reading some great books though.
Still have to finish setting up my blog.

thanks Deb. it's true, marbling really requires the right materials. It seems that all the ingredients are very sensitive. It is very easy to be unsuccessful, I've done it many times!!

These are gorgeous! I am going to have to have a go at this! Tried it once using a kit but it didn't produce anything like the quality of these patterns. Only thing for it is to it properly I guess...

thank you Dapoppins and Diane!

Good luck with it Diane. It is a lot of fun when it works. I didn't always get good results - I have wasted a lot of time and materials practicing!

Having tried my hand at it more than once I can appreciate your skill.

Lovely marbling, Rhonda, I'm sure you had a lot of fun making a variety of patterns after working on a set of the same ones. Just looking at them makes me want to set up my marbling trays but at the moment there's no room and no time. Soon, maybe. In the mean time I can enjoy yours.

This is me tomorrow. I love the process but, oy, the MESS! Gonna try the Italian vein this time. Yours looks great.

thank you acornmoon and carol! Hopefully you'll be able to dig out your marbling stuff soon, carol :)

Have fun Cindy - I agree, the clean up is not the best part. I wish I had a space where I could leave things set up... but no, I have to pack it all away each time, oh to have more space!
